Wind across the Lombok Strait usually builds through the day. Morning departures between 7am and 10am are noticeably calmer than afternoon ones.

During July and August the afternoon chop can be uncomfortable for anyone prone to seasickness. If you can only travel late, sit towards the middle-rear of the boat where movement is smallest.

In the wet season (December to February) operators occasionally cancel afternoon services. Build a buffer day into your itinerary before an international flight.

Take motion sickness tablets 45 minutes before boarding rather than on the boat — they need time to work.
